Ten things I Want To Achieve This Year

  1. Be more confident when showing my work.
  2. Get freelance work outside of the course.
  3. Have my time managed more efficiently.
  4. Get a better understanding of graphic design in the professional industry sense.
  5. Be more dedicated about communication within my work and getting the message across instead of making it look "pretty"
  6. Be more experimental, don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and don't just stick to what you know.
  7. Not to be worried about making mistakes
  8. Get to know everyone.
  9. Get more familiar with type
  10. To not be ashamed/afraid to ask for help.

How to...evaluation

What role(s) did you take on in the group?
My role was to design the back of the cards. Playing cards have a strict template which can be difficult to work with. Another role we all had was to ask questions to students who are in the same boat as us (managing money difficulties).

How well do you think you performed in the role(s)?
I think I worked pretty well in the group. Playing cards have a strict template
and usually have a generic pattern on the back.Although I appreciated everyone's"playing card" idea,I felt stuck in that strict template.I wanted to show more freedom with my designs without trying to distract attention from the idea itself. So with everyone's permission I developed my own design showing the creative impulse.

How well do you think you worked as a group?
Well,we all got on which helped a lot. We were able to bounce ideas without any arguing. We all had our own input and we appreciated each others creative individuality.

What were the positives of working in a group?
Bouncing ideas and actually working as a group. You feel like your part of something, and when given the role you receive a great responsibility.

What were the negatives of working in a group?
Not having the creative freedom your used to having when working on a solo brief. Sometimes, when ideas are not agreed on arguments can occur which may effect the quality of the work. Also, you may be put in a group with people with low attendance or with those who don't do the work.

What will you do differently next time?
Personally,I would manage my time within the group more effectively and allocate eachothers role(s) earlier.

How could you have improved your resolution?
More research and being more confident when presenting the work.Organize the presentation abit better.
There were a few technical glitches which could've been solved earlier.

What are the strengths of you presentation?
Thorough research.Deffinatly.The team work really shows through our work.We might not have been the luckiest of groups (Team-members being ill and not coming in/The presentation taking 20mins + to load up and ready to present) but we overcame it all and still made it to the final result.

ALPHA.type visual evaluation

How are the the four words selected to represent the typeface being explored?
(How could this be explored further?)
Well I've chosen an approiate typeface to communicate sentimental (Bodoni) which also suggests that Tom is laid back.I could ask more questions and get more personal with Tom so it communicates his personallity cause at the moment I feel like I'm letting my personallity bleed in and I dont want that to happen.

Why is the existing typeface that has been selected to manipulate an inappropiate/Appropiate choice?
Bodni-It was an appropiate choice because It has delicate serifs and some parts of the typeface are thin and delicate. One of the words chosen were sentimental. And the definition I would give "Sentimental" is something which is emotionally delicate. So with this in mind I think bodoni is an appropiate typeface in that aspect.Another word selected was Laid back.Although at first glance bodoni could look like a serious, formal and a delicate font it also holds laid back properties. The lower case "g" has a very fluid, open loop. Also the link on the g starts out quite thin and gets fatter leading towards the loop. This gives Bodoni the laid back quality Im looking for.Its fluid,Open loops, and rounded terminals.

What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface so far?
By adding more curves and bigger loops and maybe even making the typeface italic it could communicate laid back. But contrasting with sentimental I manilpulate the shoulders and make them thinner.

Actions to be taken?

  1. Ask more questions-dive deeper into Toms personallity.
  2. Trial and error-Play alot more with the type and dont be afraid to make mistakes
  3. More research on the type itself.
